Business Echo is an interview series celebrating the incredible individuals shaping the Okanagan’s business landscape. Through candid conversations, we’ll dive into their journeys, challenges, and triumphs—offering inspiration and insights along the way.

With nearly 20 years in the dental field, Sara Masiuk saw a need for more accessible, stigma-free preventive care. After moving to the Okanagan, she founded SMYL Dental Hygiene, a welcoming space designed to empower patients and prioritize whole-health care.

In this interview, Sara shares her journey, the inspiration behind SMYL, and how she’s changing the way people experience dental hygiene.

OE: Hello! thank you for granting this interview, could you please tell us a little about yourself

SM: Absolutely! My name is Sara Masiuk and I am a Registered Dental Hygiene Practitioner and the founder of SMYL Dental Hygiene. With nearly two decades in the dental field, I’ve worked as a restorative dental hygienist, educator, and independent practitioner in both Ontario and British Columbia. After moving to the Okanagan almost five years ago, I noticed a gap in preventive dental care. Many patients shared their struggles in accessing services, and I listened. I wanted to create something different- something that broke away from the traditional dental experience and eliminated the stigma often associated with it. That’s how SMYL Dental Hygiene was born: a welcoming, inclusive space designed to provide a whole-health experience. My passion lies in helping people feel confident in their smiles while empowering them to take charge of their overall well-being.

OE: What is your business all about and what inspired you to start your business?

SM: SMYL Dental Hygiene is more than just a dental hygiene studio- it’s a place where comfort, wellness, and expert care come together. Many people associate dental visits with anxiety, long wait times, and rushed appointments. Over the years, I’ve listened to these concerns and wanted to create a calm, spa-like environment where patients feel at ease. Our focus is on personalized, patient-centered care in a stress-free setting. We prioritize consistency, accessibility and affordability while ensuring each patient receives the highest quality of preventive care.

OE: What are some common misconceptions people have about dental hygiene?

SM: One of the biggest misconceptions is that if your teeth and gums look and feel fine, you don’t need a cleaning. In reality, plaque and tartar build up over time, even with regular brushing and flossing. Another myth is that dental hygienists only clean teeth. In fact, we play a crucial role in preventing gum disease, detecting oral health issues, and educating patients on the connection between oral and overall health.

Another common misconception is that dental hygienists can only be seen in a traditional dental office. Many people don’t realize that independent dental hygiene practitioners are skilled clinicians who can provide the same, if not better, quality of care than a dental office setting. Patients have the right to choose their dental hygiene provider and are not limited to the staff within their dentist’s office. At SMYL Dental Hygiene, you have a dedicated dental hygienist who will ensure you always receive consistent care throughout your oral health journey. We also provide personalized, patient-centered care in a welcoming and accessible setting, ensuring high-quality treatment that is both affordable and covered by dental insurance plans. And, yes, we can collaborate with your dentist or can connect you with a trusted local dentist if needed. Remember, YOU have a choice!

OE: What services do you offer, and do you specialize in any particular treatments?

SM: At SMYL Dental Hygiene, we offer a range of preventive and cosmetic dental hygiene services, including:

  • Comprehensive dental hygiene exams

  • Professional dental cleanings

  • Teeth whitening

  • Oral cancer screenings

  • Digital X-rays

  • Personalized oral health education and more!

Our holistic, patient-centered approach ensures that each individual receives care tailored to their needs. Whether someone struggles with dental anxiety, requires gentle care, or is looking for a fresh approach to their oral health, we’re here to help.

OE: Can you share a moment in your career that you’re particularly proud of?

SM: One of my proudest moments was opening the doors to SMYL Dental Hygiene. It was a dream that took years of experience, learning, and hard work to bring to life. Seeing patients walk into my studio and feel comfortable, cared for, and excited about their oral health makes every challenge worthwhile. When a patient tells me they actually look forward to their appointment, I know I’m making a difference.

Another passion of mine is giving back to those with limited access to dental care. Over the years, I have dedicated many volunteer hours to supporting communities in need, including seniors in long-term care facilities. As a long-term care committee member of the British Columbia Dental Hygienists' Association (BCDHA), I work alongside dedicated hygienists advocating for improved oral health initiatives in senior care settings. This commitment and my experiences in the field led to my recent appointment as the Interior Board Director for BCDHA, where I advocate for dental hygienists across the region. I’m also thrilled that SMYL Dental Hygiene will be participating in its first Gift From The Heart (GFTH) National Day this June- a day dedicated to providing preventive dental care to those in need.

OE: How do you balance running a business with other aspects of your life?

SM: It’s definitely a learning process! Running a business takes dedication and passion, but I also recognize the importance of taking time to reset and recharge. I stay organized, set boundaries, and prioritize self-care. I firmly believe that I can’t provide the best care for my patients if I don’t take care of myself. Spending time with loved ones, enjoying the outdoors, and simply unwinding helps me maintain that balance. I’m incredibly grateful for the support of those who have been part of this journey with me!

OE: What’s a piece of advice you’d give to women looking to start their own business?

SM: Trust yourself and take the leap! It’s easy to doubt whether you’re ready, but the truth is, there will never be a "perfect" time. Surround yourself with a strong support system, stay open to learning, and don’t be afraid to take up space in your industry. Your passion and vision are what make your business unique- embrace that!

OE: If you had unlimited funds for one day, what’s the first thing you’d do for your business?

SM: I’d continue to invest in state-of-the-art technology to further enhance the patient experience. The advancements in our industry are incredible, and my goal has always been to ensure that my patients receive the best care possible.

OE: What’s your favourite Okanagan spot to relax or find inspiration?

SM: I love being by the water or exploring the trails. There’s something incredibly calming about nature. It helps me clear my mind, reset, and find new inspiration for my work.

OE: What’s one thing about you that people might not know?

SM: I’m multilingual! Having lived internationally, I love connecting with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. It’s something that allows me to make my patients feel even more comfortable and understood in my practice.
